| Abstract | Explores current framework for conservation and management under Antarctic Treaty System (ATS), with brief history of human activities in region and discussion of formation and operation of ATS and 1991 Madrid Protocol on Environmental Protection. Considers issues of knowledge management with particular reference to local impacts and habitat loss, homogenisation of biota, impact of climate change, and harvesting and removal of resources. Provides critique of management of these issues within ATS regime and considers possible future directions. Includes appendix setting out protocol for minimising potential for introductions at field research sites drawn up by SCAR programme on Regional Sensitivity to Climate Change in Antarctic Terrestrial and Limnetic Ecosystems (RiSCC) |
