Abstract Discusses plant biodiversity in continental Antarctica with particular reference to mosses, including genetic diversity within and among Antarctic moss populations; dispersal and colonisation; mutation; origins of Antarctic moss populations; and plant pathogens. Comments briefly on potential use of ITS gene sequences to identify snow and endolithic algae; and use of molecular genetic techniques to investigate diversity and dispersal of vascular plants in Maritime Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands
