| Abstract | Radio-echo sounding (RES) data collected by the Polar Marine Geological Research Expedition in 1998-2004 have been used to investigate internal structure of the Antarctic ice sheet over the vast area of subglacial Lake Vostok. A comparison of the RES vertical profile obtained in the vicinity of 5G-1 hole at Vostok Station and ice core records of atmospheric dust and ice grain sizes supports a significance of RES-detected internal layers as isochrones in ice sheet. The RES imageries have then been used to visually trace internal layers over the Lake Vostok area. Based on this technique, we extend the ages of the layers dated in accordance with age-depth relationship at Vostok Station (Salamatin et al., 2004) to the same layers along the RES profiles completed to the northern part of the lake. Up to now three isochrones (29.5, 54.5, and 150.8 kyr) have only been reliably traced from the Vostok drilling site to the very northern edge of the lake. The isochrones are found at depths 535, 830 and 2100 m at Vostok site (total ice thickness 2750 m) and at depths 450, 800 and 2050 m at a northern site with ice-sheet thickness of about 4000 m, correspondingly. Our preliminary results implies the ice core paleoclimatic record longer than at Vostok Station can be obtained in case of deep ice drilling implemented in the northern area of subglacial Lake Vostok. The dated internal layers provide a good reference to validate the numerical model calculations and thereby to find the best site for deep ice coring in the northern part of the lake. |
