| Abstract | Natural disasters like the 2004 tsunami bear graphic testimony to the Earth's incredible power and to an obvious corollary: that effective use of geoscientific knowledge can save lives and protect property. Such knowledge also enables satisfying, in a sustainable manner, the growing need for Earth's resources by an expanding human population. |
