| Abstract | Contemporary understanding of global change in the integrated Earth system assigns a central role to Antarctica, with its profound influences on geodynamics; ocean and atmospheric circulation; Earth albedo and energy budget; and Earth's gravity field. New and emerging technologies are changing the scope and pace of scientific discovery on the continent, stimulating and depending upon ever-closer international cooperation. The international workshop, Frontiers and Opportunities in Antarctic Geosciences, brought together 68 researchers from 10 countries to explore directions for future research and identify key opportunities for international cooperation and scientific progress in the 21st Century. This article introduces key themes and outcomes of the workshop, and summarizes research areas that are anticipated to grow and stimulate new opportunities for international collaboration. |
