Abstract Reports results of examination of satellite multi-sensor remote sensing datasets of ocean color chlorophyll-a (Chl- a), sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice concentration during austral summers 1998- 2002. High concentrations of Chl-a were observed in water below 0°C, and phytoplankton blooms extended into shallow areas along isobath. One pattern of SST distribution was warm water located to north of region associated with polynya in early spring, and the other pattern was characterized by distribution of cold water throughout study area, with difference between SST distributions probably caused by shift of Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC). Cold water from Antarctic coastal current mixed with meltwater to provide vertical stability of water column for phytoplankton blooms. Results suggest that summer phytoplankton blooms in study area can be attributed to water conditions affected by melting sea ice, movement of ACC, and sea floor topography.
