Abstract Overview of role of Chilean Navy in exploration and development of Magallanes region and Maritime Antarctica, including telecommunication, hydrocarbons, territorial claims and defense, tourism, fishing and aquaculture, and urban development. Evaluates role of Capitanias de Puerto and Alcaldias de Mar in emerging Chilean policy of concentrating Antarctic efforts in areas where contribution is unique, rather than previous emphasis on territorial claims, and discusses contribution of Navy to recent hydrographic surveys, debate on Antarctic tourism, environmental protection, and maritime safety.
