Abstract 150 years ago (in 1858), the Irish physicist John Tyndall was given the Honorary Membership by the Naturforschende Gesellschaft in Zurich. The work of Tyndall is probably best known by the "Tyndall effect" that describes the scattering of light by particulate matter in the air (or also in solution). His investigations proved in addition the occurrence and the transport of microorganisms in the air which are distributed in the atmosphere very inhomogeneously. As passionate mountaineer he studied also the flow properties of ice and glaciers. A publication from 1858 in the Vierteljahrsschrift of the Naturforschende Gesellschaft addressed this topic.
