Abstract Describes global, coarse resolution ice-ocean model, forcing with daily surface air temperature and wind data, and experimental design. Analyzes simulated year- to-year variability of ice area and volume in both hemispheres and compares ice area anomalies from last two decades with satellite measurements. Simulated ice area decreases 1% per decade overall, in Southern Hemisphere mostly through abrupt late 1970s- early 1980s retreat. Ice volume decreases by 1.8% per decade in North, increases by 1.5% per decade in South. Strong decadal variations and model-dependence of Antarctic trend suggest cautious interpretation.
