Abstract:The best ice navigation routes within the Novolazarevskaya-Mirnyy--Cape Town--Freemantle region are charted and the navigable period for each route calculated. Probabilities that Mirnyy, Molodezhnaya, and Novolazarevskaya can be reached at a given time of year for the UL class Soviet vessel are calculated. For Mirnyy the probability is 40 percent in early December, 85 in early March; for Molodezhnaya zero until the middle of January but 70 by early February; for Novolazarevskaya it reaches a maximum of only 50 for a few days in early February.
