Abstract: | Ice cores from the Quelccaya ice cap have been studied in order to test certain assumptions made in the interpretation of polar ice cores and to aid in an interhemispheric correlation of polar ice cores by providing data from an intermediate location. Firn temperatures were measured, density measurements were made, and snow samples were collected for laboratory analysis. The pit stratigraphy suggests a net snow accumulation of about 3 m during 1973-74 in agreement with the findings of Thompson and Dansgaard (29-3566; F-15000). Glacial geological studies reveal the presence of three end-moraine belts with their outermost ridges about 2, 5, and 9 km beyond the present ice margin.. These belts, provisionally referred to as the Huancané I, II, and III moraines, and their ages are discussed. |
