Abstract:Glaciological studies conducted by the author during his participation in the U.S. antarctic program as an exchange scientist are discussed. The research included studies of the structure of the snow layer at South Pole station and at dome C, ice sheet structure in the McMurdo Sound vicinity, and sea ice growth in McMurdo Sound. Snow stratigraphy was studied with depth, snow density was determined in the pits, and snow samples were taken for oxygen-isotope analysis. Sea ice thicknesses were measured at 21 sites and accretion rates were determined. Work along the McMurdo Ice Shelf consisted of glaciomorphological observations, photography, collecting moraine material and rock samples, and hole drilling with ice core sampling down to 1 to 2 m. Erebus, Koettlitz, Wright Lower, Garwood, and Hobbs glaciers were also studied. The study of ice samples from the McMurdo Ice Shelf and from dead ice areas has shown that their structure and level of mineralization are similar; however, they differ greatly from glaciers formed by atmospheric precipitation.
